This weekend I got to put a big check mark on my “Life Long to-do” list. Right between “Go Skydiving” (which probably will never happen) and “Read Finnegan’s Wake” (which I tried, and decidedly will not happen), is “Go Backstage at a Broadway Show.” Check.
That’s right. A friend of mine got comped tickets to a new show called After Miss Julie. It stars Sienna Miller (GI Joe, Alfie, being generally super attractive) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Eli Stone, being generally super British), and is written by Patrick Marber (who wrote the screenplay for the movie Closer). Well, turns out my friend knew the main understudy for Jonny’s role, and after the show, he asked us if we wanted to go backstage and have some beers. The answer was, and always will be, yes.

The play was actually very good. If you have seen Closer, then you will sense the familiarity with Marber’s style. He toys with timing throughout the play, something that only really good actors are able to sell.
Girls Version: The play exhibits a back and forth power struggle between the sexes, with some rather intense scenes. It pinpoints the socio-economic struggle for servants in 1940′s Britain, and the struggle for men and women to establish power in their relationships.
Guy Version: Man, Sienna Miller is so hot. I mean, seriously.
Anyway, I wish I could say that I got to meet the stars backstage, but as an understudy, our contact did not want to be pedantic in inviting people back there so we tiptoed up the stairs of the American Airlines Theatre, to his spacious dressing room, and enjoyed some beverages. His dressing room was bigger than my room. To be quite honest, the backstage is really not that spectacular. But something about the word backstage sounds pretty cool doesn’t it? I am going to start considering my bathroom the “backstage” of my apartment. Maybe my bowel movements will be more inspired, or become famous?
For all of you who don’t care at all about theater, here is a special treat. I noticed the company who makes my computer bag, and had a laugh. If you get it, you get it. If you don’t, don’t worry about it. Cinco Credit Union

Enjoy.
